Respect Life Conference 2020

  • The annual Respect Life Conference, co-sponsored by the Diocese of Steubenville and Franciscan University of Steubenville, will take place at Finnegan Fieldhouse, on the campus of Franciscan University of Steubenville, Oct. 10.

The keynote speaker will be Archbishop Joseph F. Naumann of Kansas City, Kansas, who serves as the chairman for the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops’ Committee for Pro-Life Activities.

Archbishop Naumann is an ardent and outspoken defender of the church's teachings, especially on issues related to the Culture of Life. Ordained to the priesthood in 1975, and to the episcopacy in 1997, he has served as Archbishop of Kansas City in Kansas since 2005. In 2018 he was elected as Chairman of the US Bishops Committee on Pro-Life Activities. In March, 2020, he launched a special initiative – Walking With Moms in Need – in recognition of the 25th Anniversary of St. John Paul II's landmark encyclical The Gospel of Life (Evangelium Vitae).

The conference will begin at 9 a.m. with the keynote address, “Living the Gospel of Life.” At 9:55 a.m., a panel discussion will take place. The panel will include Archbishop Naumann, Steubenville Bishop Jeffrey M. Monforton, Patrick Lee, a professor of bioethics at Franciscan University; Dr. Paul Macdonald, a local Catholic physician; and Laura Doroski, respect life coordinator at Holy Family Parish, Steubenville.

At 11 a.m., Mass will be celebrated  by Archbishop Naumann and concelebrated by Bishop Monforton. The archbishop will be the homilist.

Because of the restrictions in place due to the coronavirus, registration will be limited to 100 people and participants will be required to follow applicable safety standards, including social distancing and facial coverings.

Preregistration is required for in-person attendance no later than Oct. 7. The event is free to attend.
